How We Test: The Ergonomic Matrix

You aren’t a “cold sleeper,” and your body isn’t shaped wrong. Most outdoor gear is engineered around male anatomical averages, then size-scaled, recolored, and sold to women without re-engineering the parts that matter. We call that the Unisex Trap — and it’s why the pack bruises your hips, the straps pinch, and the “20-degree” bag leaves you shivering at 35°F.

The short version: we score gear with a published framework called the Ergonomic Matrix, applied to manufacturer specifications, standards ratings, and aggregated owner reports from women who share their measurements. We show the score, the evidence behind it, and the weak spots — including on products we recommend.

The Ergonomic Matrix

Every product we review is scored on up to three vectors. Not every vector applies to every category — a hoodie has no load path — so we score what applies and mark the rest N/A.

Vector The question it answers
LD Load Distribution Does the product transfer force through female skeletal geometry — iliac crest height and flare, torso length — or through a male template?
CD Contour Dynamics Does the shape map to female proportions (bust clearance, narrower heel, shoulder-to-hip ratio), or is it a scaled men’s pattern?
TD Thermal Density Is thermal performance referenced to a female baseline — like the ISO 23537 Comfort rating — or a male one?

The 0–3 scale

Score Tier What it means
0 Unisex Trap No female-specific engineering at all. “Unisex” with no published dimensional differences.
1 Cosmetic Different sizes and colors. Same construction. The “shrink it and pink it” tier.
2 Adapted Real dimensional changes to some elements, but the core architecture is still the men’s product.
3 Engineered Ground-up female-specific construction with published specs to prove it.

Scores are normalized to 9 points. 7–9 is Matrix Verified. 4–6 is Conditional — right for some bodies and uses, and we name the caveat. 0–3 means don’t buy it as a women’s product.

A low score isn’t automatically a “don’t buy.” If you’re one trip into a new sport, the $40 Cosmetic-tier option is often the right call — and we’ll say so. The Matrix exists so you know what you’re accepting before you pay, not to upsell you.

What we count as evidence

  • Tier A: manufacturer-published dimensional specs and standards ratings (ISO 23537 for sleeping bags, ASTM R-value for pads). This is the primary basis for every score.
  • Tier B: independent lab and standards data.
  • Tier C: owner reports at volume, filtered to reviewers who state their measurements and use case.
  • Tier D: single reviews, influencer content, brand copy — leads to investigate, never a scored input.

If a claim can’t be traced to Tier A–C, it doesn’t go in the article.

One example of why this matters

Sleeping bags sold in North America under ISO 23537 carry up to three temperature ratings. The Comfort rating is measured against a standard adult woman. The Limit rating — typically about 10°F colder — is measured against a standard adult man. Brands routinely put the Limit number on the hangtag because it looks more impressive.

So when you shivered through a 35°F night in a “20-degree” bag: the bag performed exactly to spec. You were just never shown your spec. Always find the Comfort rating — and treat any bag that publishes a single unlabeled number as unrated.

What we don’t do

We’re analysts, not a field-testing lab, and we won’t pretend otherwise. You’ll never read “we hiked 40 miles in these” here unless someone actually did. We publish the method precisely so you can check our work — every score cites something you can verify yourself.
